‘LOOK INTO MY EYES, THE EYES, NOT AROUND THE EYES........’
WHO CAN YOU TRUST NOWADAYS?
If there was one word bandied around more than most
during the lacklustre election campaign it has to
be ‘trust’.
Politicians of all persuasions urging you not to trust
their opponents to run the economy, negotiate Brexit
or to man the ramparts; then underlining that any
cause for concern is well founded by appearing
completely unacquainted with their own policies when a
microphone is thrust at them.
Having been promised ‘wealth cascading down the
generations’ by John Major the good folk of Tunbridge
Wells were genuinely disgusted at the prospect of
a ‘dementia tax’ and rarely has a set of kitten heels
performed such a speedy volte-face; what price a ‘good
deal’?
Voters have become inured to sound bite politics and
weary of the meaningless platitudes that are trotted
out during seemingly interminable campaigns, then
forgotten the day after polling day; as a result, trust in,
and respect for, politicians is at something of a self-
inflicted nadir.
Trust is hard won, and it is the lack of trust in many of
the traditional financial institutions that has fuelled the
shift towards financial self-reliance – DIY investing.
Suitably educated, and well informed, the ranks of those
taking control of their finances are likely to be swollen
as we move closer to the US’ 401k model; it appears
we are not yet ready to place our trust in robo advice
as a recent
said that 91% of people across
Europe would not let a computer programme make and
act on financial decisions on their behalf.
In this edition of DIY Investor Magazine trust is a
recurring theme – with trust eroded in previously ‘blue
riband’ final salary schemes,
David ‘DAN’ Norman
looks at things to consider before you cash one in;
Francis Moore
has no truck with ‘closet’ index tracking
‘active’ funds and
Philip Gilbert
looks at bricks and
mortar investing through housing associations.
Georgette Harrison
explains how to find the right
investment fund,
Jake Wombwell-Povey
explains the
role Gogi Investments has to play in building trust in
marketplace lending, and as the interest rate charged
hits 6.1%,
Muckler
looks at the thorny issue of student
finance; yes, trust Mr Clegg.
Always a staple, we have some ideas for those investing
for income -
Polar Capital Trust
looks at opportunities
arising from healthcare transformation, and
JP Morgan
AM explains how the structure of an investment trust
allows it to pay enhanced dividends.
Scottish Trust
explains how its contrarian approach
is designed to unlock long term returns by investing
in stocks that may currently be out of favour, whilst
Lawrie Chandler
looks for fixed income with the
backing of the blue chips. Once they have taken the
plunge, DIY investors most often express a sense of
relief and empowerment, and there have rarely been
more resources to assist those on the road to financial
freedom.
