BEING PATIENT THIS SUMMER
The summer months are frequently sluggish in the
markets. To illustrate the point: over the past 50 years,
the average return on the UK market between May
Day and Hallowe’en has been -0.7% whereas between
Hallowe’en and May Day the figure is +7%.
There is often little dealing activity during the summer
which also sometimes creates unusual volatility.
This volatility can play into the hands of patient
investors, and we try to take a longer time horizon and
invest when others are fearful.
