STRANGE DAYS INDEED
It’s been thirty seven years since John Lennon met his
end outside the Dakota Building leaving ‘Nobody Told
Me’ in the can but unfinished; if he was discomfited
then, just how alien would things seem to him now?
Recent events in Rotterdam and scenes of ugly pop-
ulism around the world are complete anathema to John’s
peace and love ethos; but then look how that ended.
Whilst the daffs in the park and gamely strengthening
sun may feel familiar, this year’s ISA season does seem
tinged with uncertainty.
Optimists may point to record highs in the markets and
scoff at Project Fear’s doom mongers; pessimists may
fear that the honeymoon will end as soon as Article 50
is triggered; realists may justifiably say that we just don’t
know what to expect - uncharted territory, like a black
cab south of the river guv.
Mr Wilders’ showing suggests that right-wing populism
may not yet have stormed across the Polders, but Ma-
rine le Pen believes that she can smell ‘the perfume of
victory’; what then for the EU? Spreadsheet Phil’s u-turn
on NICs may be symptomatic of a party that listens, or
the inevitable consequence of a horlicks of a decision;
either way, are the PM and Chancellor tight enough, or
genuinely up to negotiating Brexit? With the return of
inflation and the expectation that interest rates will start
to creep up, where are investment returns to be found?
As ever DIY Investor Magazine is here to help those
choosing financial self-reliance with content and trading
ideas from around the markets.
In this edition we take a look at the growing family of ISA
products including the
IFISA – ‘Getting more out of
your ISA’
– and
Francis Moore
looks at the
Lifetime ISA
vs
SIPPs
, and asks if we are edging
closer to a Pension ISA?
Dominique Riedl
of
justETF
explains commodity ETFs and we welcome
Annamarie
Cumisky
of the
London Passive Investing Club
as a
contributor. We have good market perspective from our
friends at
Henderson Global Investors
and
Scottish
Investment Trust
explains why
‘We’re Investing in
Ugly Ducklings’
!
JP Morgan Asset Management
sug-
gests
‘What Millennials can Learn from Generation
X’
as they face being the first generation ever to earn
less throughout their lifetime than their predecessors.
‘The trend is your friend, until the end, when it bends’
– we hear from two very different momentum investors
Douglas Chadwick of Saltydoginvestor
and our very
own
Humbug
. Elsewhere, we introduce the hot topic of
blockchain
technology and BTL Group, one of the few
providers that investors can currently buy into.
We consider the balance of your portfolio and the fine
line between the euphoria of financial independence
and the night sweats of excessive exposure to risk.
With
AIM
stocks up 33% in a year, we ask if the market’s
run out of puff, or whether there is still some way to go
for ISA investors, and with the ongoing dearth of
retail
bonds, Mr Bond
wonders if there’s a ‘third way’? We
hope that you find this content useful and welcome your
